The Poetics of Space—Gaston Bachelard
“If I were asked to name the chief benefit of the house, I should say: the house shelters day dreaming, the house protects the dreamer, the house allows one to dream in peace.” |

“Feng Shui” means “wind and water.”
Floating downstream, watching wild flowers on the shore as they gracefully respond to the breeze...
This is our ideal pace for a watercourse, for a gentle wind, and for our life. But water/wind/life can blow us over, knock us down, or stagnate. By utilizing Feng Shui principles, by tapping into life force energy, or chi, we can return to the down stream, with the encouraging wind at our back.
Two essential principles of “good Feng Shui” are balance and harmony.
Balance is equilibrium; it is necessary for physical confidence in our movements, it is what we want our life to be, and it is what we find comforting to look upon. In Feng Shui we focus on balancing the elements, yin and yang, the different aspects of our lives.
We need different and balancing energies in our life. We need vitality—vibrant colors wake us up, so may be just the right thing for our family gathering spaces or the home office—places we want to encourage activity, to welcome community, and to spark our imagination. We also need serenity—cool colors, water trickling in a fountain relax us, so may be what we seek when we want to rest, to contemplate, to curl up and read, or to just be—places that nurture solitude.
In design, harmony combines variety and unity. This is the principle that enables our relationships to thrive as well. Our homes can be places that contain harmonious design AND encourage harmonious relationships. By thoughtfully instilling harmony in our spaces, we create the restorative home we desire. |
